I'm a lucky dude.
My work has taken me around the world and back multiple times, but some experiences are beyond compare. The amazing folks designing U2's latest tour (some amazing highlights over at the band's site) contacted me to produce for artist Jeff Frost, helping him capture content for their show.
Let me start off by saying- Jeff is worthy of a post all his own. This dude is a powerhouse, customizing time lapse gear to create his own unique works of art for print, video and beyond. U2's creative team sought him out to apply some of those techniques to create content for their show. The goal: to represent our digital world. Jeff's idea? Send us to CERN where the world's scientists and physicists (do I need to use both words? are they one in the same?) are pushing the boundaries of our collective knowledge. The resulting work was not only featured in U2's Innocence + Experience project, but will be a part of Jeff's upcoming film Circuit Board Species.
Let me follow up by saying- everyone we met on the CERN team is worthy of a post all their own. The folks at CERN were beyond gracious, and brought us into their life's work for the experience of a lifetime. I would attempt to sum up their goals here, but they do a much better job. Think of CERN like the European NASA... except CERN enjoys the support of multiple nations, all collaborating in an attempt to explain the universe around us. Who are we? Why are we here? What has this all been about? Waking up every day came with a sense of urgency, like any of those questions could be answered at any moment- the next boundary line of human knowledge drawn right here in this complex.
Getting shown around felt like getting a tour of the NASA in Interstellar- witnessing the frontier of human knowledge churning in real time, and getting up close to parts of the LHC most people never see was truly a privilege. The folks who populate CERN among the best in the world at what they do, and their excitement was palpable. I can't say I didn't have trouble understanding lots of what we saw, but who cares when you have the world's leading scientific minds sharing it with you? You glean whats important. Science = awesome. CERN = the edge of the future. Reach out and grab it dude.
The next time you're aimlessly wandering the internet- skip the cat videos- do yourself a favor and go on a Google deep-dive of CERN, the LHC, and it's numerous other crazy experiments. Or if you've got an hour and a half, check out Particle Fever for the ultimate Dummies Guide to CERN.
After spending a week staying at the CERN dorms and visiting a different experiment every day, I could fill a book with stories of the people there and the frontiers they're exploring every day. From our amazing host Paola and her partner Michael, to the multimedia team that helped us along the way, and the countless scientists who adjusted their lives to let us inside, even if just for a moment.
In the meantime, it's an exciting month for this project- Jeff just did a talk at CERN's @TEDxCERN event (video online soon), and U2 just announced a live stream of their 11/14 show in Paris. Tune in to check out the amazing work of not only Jeff Frost, but a whole host of artists that combine U2's music with some next level live design.
